Sun Debs Barb Bowers

IMG 1652 1

This painting of Barbara Bowers with a beach ball combines different art pieces, including a Sarasota Visitor’s Guide from the 1950’s and a rich Siesta Key sunset. Barbara Bowers was a graduate of Sarasota High School. In her senior year, she was voted both “Most Flirtatious” and “Most Likely to Succeed”. Mind you, this was from an article from 1955 and the number of graduating seniors was tiny. Bowers was also the class secretary, a majorette for the band, and a straight-A student. At one point, during a city celebration, they “cut the city’s 50th birthday cake, which opened up to reveal Barbara Bowers as Miss 1952, one of Sarasota’s glamorous Sun-Debs.” She appears on the 1954-55 Visitor’s Guide below with the caption: “Sun Deb on the Sands of Sarasota”. The Sarasota Sun Debs were models that were trained and organized by the Sarasota Chamber of Commerce beginning in 1949 as a way of bringing glamour to tourism materials.

Holland King

Holland King's love for drawing and art began at the age of 12 when he was introduced to comic books. Holland studied illustration at the San Francisco Academy of Art. After an enlistment in the Army, he settled in Tampa, Florida where he finally started painting where his work has appeared in galleries and restaurants throughout the Tampa Bay Area. He began working with chalk at a South Tampa eatery, where his work became a draw for the store and was featured in Restaurant Monthly Magazine and on Charlie Belcher's local news program. His first chalk festival was the Clearwater Chalk Festival of October 2015 and he has been doing this and working as a freelance artist ever since. Chalk, Acrylics, and watercolor/marker are the mediums he uses the most often.
